Why Career Coaching?

Say your career is going differently than expected due to a reform in the workplace, you've lost the joy in your work, or you don't know which next step in your career suits you. And that's why you're thinking about career coaching in Amsterdam. Since 2012 Thijs guides people with questions about (work) happiness and career, as an experienced career coach he supports people with all kinds of questions around career advice in his practice in Amsterdam.

So, why is career coaching necessary?

The world is constantly innovating and thus changing. Organizations want to respond accordingly. This brings changes in positions, perhaps your job is coming to an end, or the change doesn't feel right to you. Or, on the contrary, nothing changes at all, but you as a person does change. The common denominator is that you no longer enjoy your job. Do you recognize these signs?

  • I am no longer proud of what I do

  • This work costs me (too) much energy

  • I just can't quite be myself

  • I often go to work reluctantly....

  • I really live towards weekends and my vacations

  • I have talents, but I cannot use them sufficiently in my work

  • My work-life relationship is out of balance

  • I really don't learn much new anymore....

  • I fantasize about other jobs that do fit my drives

If so, a search for what is causing these signals is a wonderful investment in yourself and your (work) happiness. Being busy with your career questions gives you direction. I have to admit: going with the flow is super helpful at times. But when it comes to your career, no one is driving it but you. So jump in that driver's seat examine your direction, to get rid of these signals.

How does career coaching work?

OK, so you're ready for something new. So find a nice, challenging work environment! Then you start thinking about what you would like to do. Big questions come to mind, such as 'what really gives me energy?' Or 'what are my talents and where can I best use them?' A career coach is there to discuss this question stress, and to provide insight into what you really want and what you stand for.

At Tatkraft, career coaching has a philosophical angle. Depth and meaning are central. With personal attention in sessions of an hour and a half, you will gain more insight into your questions and motivations, to arrive at the right next step in your career!

And "knowing what you want" has a lot to do with your "why. What is important to you, based on what motivations do you choose? A career coach is there to explore those motivations with you. At Tatkraft we call this getting to know your authentic self, so that you can make authentic choices that you fully support and that give you energy. In 1-on-1 sessions with Thijs you get personal attention and a good conversation partner who is happy to help you explore your depth in search of what gives you meaning.

Question stress

Is this everything? Am I really doing work that suits me? Why is it that I (and many people around me) walk with so many questions? For previous generations, there was often not much to choose from, so it was very clear to them which path they would take. One worked to put bread on the table, to live. Meanwhile, we live in a society where work is also allowed to be "fun. Today's working thirty-somethings grew up with the idea that their world consisted of a sea of possibilities. So much more is possible, and there is so much fun to be had in a career! And then it comes: what do I like to do? And that is the stress of questions.

Need to be successful

That question stress can also arise from a desire for success. The seemingly unlimited career opportunity puts a lot of pressure on making the right choice. After all, you are responsible for your success and, therefore, your failure in your career. Heavy, isn't it?

The question is whether you can figure out where this desire for success comes from. Is this an outside pressure, or is it coming from within yourself? Are you making other people happy, or yourself? Who actually says you need to be successful?

Being successful, performing and also realizing yourself have become great ideals. It is internal as well as sometimes external expectations of you that can fuel those pressures.

Not knowing what you want

If you are now at a point where you know you want things to be different, but are not quite sure what you want, it is very difficult to make choices. This can make the amount of options seem even more overwhelming. Especially when you are interested in several things, it is often not clear at once what is best for your future right now. If you had a clear vision of what you really want, choices would really become easier.

How to find out what you really want? Not by looking at the approval of others, but by diving deep within yourself. If you really want to make an authentic choice, that is the only answer. No matter how well intentioned, another person can never decide for you what you really want, because another person cannot see what it looks like inside you.

If you want to know diving within yourself, read about it here more about it (know yourself be yourself training) or watch my webinar (personal power) on how to make authentic choices. Or read more about how valuable your career development is first!

career development is valuable

So a career coach helps you with your career issues. Your career development is a lifelong journey of self-awareness, goal setting and professional improvement. It starts with understanding who you are and making sure that everything you do is consistent with your values, strengths and interests. Once you have that clear, it's about setting goals, making a plan and executing that plan.

Career development is not fixed. It is not an activity you do once - and then move on. That would be too easy; you keep evolving and so does your career.

Being busy with your career development gives you a sense of fulfillment. Because you are moving toward that valuable job that gives you meaning. Doing something you are good at and enjoy gives you that spark we all want. I can't describe it better than our friend Alain.
